Ita Buttrose x Three Food Memories

Live Audience Recording presented by the Australian Chamber Orchestra

300 guests gathered for a special live audience recording of podcast Three Food Memories with special guest Ita Buttrose AC OBE, hosted by Savva Savas in conjunction with the Australian Chamber Orchestra

Our creator & host of Three Food Memories, Savva Savvas, was celebrating his 50th birthday on the night, and told the audience that it was a dream come true to interview Ita on the special occasion.

To add to the warmth and joy, his nine year old twin boys Leo & Dane introduced the evening to rounds of applause.

As Ita shared her three significant food memories, guests were served each dish to enjoy as she explained their significance in her life. The first course was a dish in honour of her childhood days spent at the fish markets with her father at Watson’s Bay where she grew up. Next was a serving of sliced ham with raisins; a nod to a romantic train trip she took through Canada with her late husband, Alasdair. Last up was her signature dish, ‘three thousand dollar chicken’, a cheeky homage to the time Ita was paid $3,000 to cook for a group of fans in Townsville in the 90s.

As a surprise, Savva tracked down lifetime fan, 80-year-old Beryl Lane, who flew to Sydney especially for the occasion. She was invited on stage to interview Ita herself, and spoke of the significant impact Ita has had on women all over Australia, especially those in regional areas.

Savva took guests on a journey of Ita’s significant achievements in Australian media over eight decades: starting as a teenage copy girl and eventually becoming Editor of the Daily Telegraph; holding her own with the Packers and the Murdochs; launching Cleo and Ita Magazines and everything in between. Laughter abounded with ribald talk of the Cleo centrefolds of the 70s and the fact that ‘elderly people. Savva celebrated her tireless work for AIDS charities with The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation being her long-time cause celebrated on the evening.

Special guests in attendance included many of Ita’s immediate family as well as Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Yasmine Ghoniem, Scott Tweedie, Victoria Morish and Gemma Oldfield.
